2026 Impact Report: Islote Sucre, Ecuador

We are excited to share our latest impact report, showcasing the two-year progress of rrreefs’ project on Ecuador’s Islote Sucre.

We are excited to share our latest impact report, showcasing the two-year progress of rrreefs’ project on Ecuador’s Islote Sucre.

Around 70% of coral areas in Ecuadorian waters have been lost. In May 2024, together with our local partner Conservación Marina Ecuador, we built the country’s first clay reef at Islote Sucre, inside Machalilla National Park, made possible by Melitta Group. It was also our first reef in the eastern Pacific.

Two years of scientific monitoring later, the results are encouraging:
🐟 2.5x increase in fish abundance compared to before the build
🦀 The highest invertebrate diversity of all three surveyed sites
🪸 Coral colonies of 12 cm
🌊 25 m² of reef regenerated

This reef would not exist without CONMAR, who hold the permit and were integral to the build. Through their Reef Protectors program, 35 members of the Los Ciriales community take part in monitoring the reef. A big thank you to the CONMAR team and the Los Ciriales community for their dedication, and to Melitta Group for making this project possible.
